It is always well for a state to be ranked nationally low when it comes to alcohol abuse. Since this is generally one of the most commonly abused drug in the country, it says a lot for a state that is not the norm. In the case of West Virginia, this is the case, luckily. Since alcohol is so accessible, it is almost understandable that many people seek treatment for the use of this substance, but in this state, things go a little differently. This is to not say that alcohol is not a factor when it comes to abuse in West Virginia, because it does account for more admissions than other drugs.
Although the state is one that is not known for its overtly large abuse of the common substance, it is not to say that they do not have a myriad of other problems that plague the state, and these are of the illicit variety. In considering the biggest vices of the state, one has to know that a large portion of the state is rural. It is in these environments where there generally tends to be a lot of marijuana cultivation. And additionally, there is also the space to make an even more addictive product, and these are methamphetamines. Meth abuse is a huge problem in the state of West Virginia, and it accounts for a large part of admissions into programs targeting substance addiction.
The use of methamphetamines is especially dangerous, and in this state, there are very many operations where this drug is being manufactured. What sets this state apart from others is the fact that while there are many states with meth problems, there are very few that have as many of these “meth houses” in their state.
There are other drugs, besides marijuana and methamphetamines that are also running rampant in the state of West Virginia. There is an issue with cocaine abuse, much like other states, that is also prevalent in many areas of the state. It is available essentially everywhere, but generally found to be readily available in the large West Virginia cities.
One of the saddest things concerning abuse in this state is the fact that there are many people who need the help of a drug treatment program, and simply are refusing to acknowledge the fact that their problem needs to be addressed. In the last year the study was conducted, in 2006, more than 42,000 people would be ideal candidates for treatment programs. These people did not make the effort to get it. Out of this large number, only about 7,500 people actually took the steps to correct their lives.
With over 80 programs in the state, there is enough help for everyone who enlists their services. Obtaining treatment is something that many people need to do to improve the quality of their lives, because the disease of addiction is one that will never do anything but hurt everyone that it touches. And with all of the services available, there should be no person who has to suffer.
