Washington is one of the states that people usually consider to be one of the biggest hubs when it comes to drug smuggling. That is a very true sentiment, considering where it lies geographically. To the north, there’s Canada, where a large amount of marijuana is shipped. Justr a couple of states below is California, where an exorbitant amount of drugs are brought into the country from Mexico. Then there is the western half of the state, where there’s hundreds of miles of coastline. This makes the state vulnerable from all angles, and the local law enforcement as well as the DEA combating the effects of drugs.
In a state such as this, it is no wonder why there are many different forms of drug abuse, as the people are constantly bombarded with the sales, making very many addicts in the state of Washington. Anything that the person may want is available here, as there are mass amounts of drugs moved across this state, whether it is marijuana, cocaine, heroin, MDMA, or methamphetamines. One of the shocking figures is meth amphetamines, which have seen a large increase of people in treatment centers because of this ravaging drug. In the eyar 1992, meth users represented 1% in the rehabilitation centers of the state, then it skyrocketed to 30% in 2005. This is a trend in most western states where they are seeing dramatic increases when it comes to meth abuse. This highly addictive substance has claimed many lives, and has tormented people in unimaginable ways.
Cocaine is another illicit drug of many people in Washington, whether it is cocaine in powder form or the even more addictive crack. These drugs are shipped from the Mexican cartels, and at a rate that is much higher than nearly any other state. Last year, the DEA seized 502 kilograms from smugglers, testament that this is one very large problem. The use of cocaine was always perceived in Washington to be a big city problem, but more and more people are figuring out that there are hardly any places that the drugs do not reach in this state.
Realizing that they have an epidemic of mass proportions on their hands, local government spent $154 million dollars in substance abuse treatment in 2008 to combat this growing problem. Additionally, the number of drug treatment centers is growing in Washington to counterbalance the effects that the drugs have had on their communities as well, and there are about 439 facilities to insure that their residents become clean. Fortunately, very many of these options offer great results, and will combat any issue with drugs that a person may have.
When seeking treatment for drugs, it is always important to check out all of the options that are available before committing to any program. While many of them seem to operate in similar manners, many of have varying methods in the way that they provide their patients care. Whether it is an outpatient or residential care facility, a person will need to determine exactly what they feel will work for them.
