Although states in the mid-Atlantic region are known for being hubs for “spill-over” drugs being distributed through the states, Virginia is one of the few states that rank well below the national average for illicit drug abuse and alcohol dependency. With many of the other states, they fall victim to dependency, especially if they are along the corridor that connects the city of Miami to New York City. Although this is one state that does not have as many problems as others, this is not to say that they do not have their fair-share of abuse. Unfortunately, this state too is plagued with many of their residents doing drugs, just like every other state.
In Virginia, two of the biggest illicit substances most abused are marijuana and cocaine, respectively. When it comes to cocaine abuse, there are a percentage of Virginia who do the powdered form, as well as the more intense crack. Normally thought to be somewhat of an inner-city problem instead of suburbia, people have seen an influx of drugs in their communities. Although the state is not known for the same level of abuse as other states, it still is a fact that the use of drugs are spreading.
Since the abuse is branching outward, making it more accessible, there is a definite need for people who are having problems with drugs get adequate help for their situations. In the state of Virginia, there are more than 190 drug treatment programs designated to get people off of what ails them. Of all of these programs, more than 63% of them receive some sort of government funding. Just last year, the state spent $85 million dollars to combat their drug problem, and it has shown very much promise, as the figures show. Of all of facilities dedicated to substance abuse, the state owns and operates about 70 of them, and half are private non-profit. This leaves the rest for the facilities that are private for-profit treatment centers.
Even with the comparatively low number of people dependent on drug abuse in the state of Virginia, there is still adequate need for knowledge in combating abuse. As of the year 2005, it was estimated that there were about 136,000 Virginians needed some help when it came to either dependency on drugs or alcohol. That year, only about 35,000 people sought help for their addictions.
For those seeking help for drug abuse, it should be known that they should do enough research until they feel completely comfortable with a particular program or facility. Since they are not made to cater to every individual, many of the services offered are generally broad. It is advisable to locate a center where they may specialize in dealing with the drug the prospective patient may be trying to recover from, as it greatly increases the chance that they will have favorable results. Luckily, in the state of Virginia, there are many options for a person to choose from, and they can begin to put their lives back together.
