Vermont is considered to be one of the most picturesque states, one that has beauty at nearly every turn. The sad reality is that while this state is beautiful, it is hiding one ugly secret. It is one of the smallest states in the Union, but one would not assume considering the drug and alcohol abuse. It is a state where drugs are abused heavily, and while there may not be as many citizens in this state as another, it is still a very serious problem. Three of the biggest substances for abuse are alcohol, marijuana, and heroin, respectively.
When it comes to alcohol, one of the most depressing figures is to consider the people who are drinking the most. Children under the age of 18 are especially at risk for alcohol abuse in this particular state, and in 2005-2006 year, the numbers shot from 34% to 38%. Binge drinking also rose in these years, coming from about 24% to 28%. This is quite troubling news, especially considering the impressionable age of the people drinking, as It greatly enhances the chance of their being dependency down the line, if it is not already a full-blown addiction.
Marijuana abuse in the state is also considerably high, which in part is because of its proximity to Canada, which ships down large amounts of the drug regularly. Again, the youth are especially at risk when this drug is concerned, as they see it as a harmless drug with little side-effects. While it may not have any debilitating effects, it is an addictive drug where many people have started. Normally, these people ended up in a treatment center because they progressed, and started doing more addictive drugs with even higher stakes. Unfortunately, without parents adequately educating their children on the dangers, this is a cycle that will not be broken.
Another very serious addiction, like many of the northeastern states, is heroin abuse. This particular form of abuse is known to probably be the most deadly, as well as the most addictive. In Vermont, unfortunately, this opiate is responsible for many of the admissions into facilities across the states. Along with heroin, there is also the cateogory known as “other opiates” that has also played a big part in Vermont drug culture. These are drugs like OxyContin, Xanax, or Vicodin. They are known to be just as addictive and detrimental as heroin, and they make up about as many people who are in treatment centers than the drug they are modeled after.
Drug treatment centers in Vermont are prevalent, which is a ray of light for people who are battling abuse in the state. In the small state, there are about 40 different programs that are aimed at helping people get off of the drugs, and back into being fully-functioning members of society. Of all of these programs, most of them are private nonprofit clinics. The others are private for-profit clinics, as well as a couple owned by the Department of Veterans Affairs. With all of these options available, nearly everyone has access to the proper facilities, ones that will clean up their lives.
