Utah is not one of the states that come to mind when speaking in terms of drug abuse, and with its strong cemented values, it has certainly paid off. With their efforts, the state of Utah is one that has the lowest rankings nationally for illicit drug abuse. This goes the same for binge drinking, and past month use. While this is true, of course, there are still people that do abuse substance. This proves that there is no safe haven from drugs, as it spreads everywhere.
Unfortunately, there are a reported 55,000 people who are currently suffering from the abuse of substances. Although this is a small number compared to other states, there were about 18,000 people that were treated last year. This is a frightening trend among every state in the United States, that being that many people who really need the treatment are refusing it. What makes this an especially scary figure is that this is not a state where there are only a few types of drugs, the DEA points out that there are quite a few drugs that are readily available in this state.
The biggest concern in Utah is meth abuse, especially considering its placement, as one state separates it from California, and another separates it from Texas. Mexican drug smugglers fill these two states with the drug, which are distributed throughout the country. Luckily for the citizens of Utah, they have been battling the drug, and have had great success. In the year 1999, there were a reported 272 different meth labs in the state of Utah, and in 2007, there were only 3 of them seized. Unfortunately, this effort only stopped the local production of the drug, as they are still receiving shipments from the other states. The efforts of the other states have thrust meth to be the drug of choice, only behind alcohol.
This is not the only concern that threatens the residents; there is also the risk of cocaine and heroin. These drugs, like methamphetamines, are known to be very addictive, and account for a large percent of people who are receiving treatment.
Fortunately, there are options for those who are suffering from drug addiction in Utah. In the state, there are more than 130 different programs to help Utahans in their struggle to become clean. The state has vigorously fought, and has responded with more aid, and increased the amount of facilities from 118 to the present number. They have also granted more than 60 of these programs with some sort of government funding, so these facilities will be able to conduct treatment at the best way possible.
It is noteworthy to state that although this state has amazing treatment programs, all of them do not conduct their operations in the same way. It is important for the person who is serious about treatment do their own research in finding something that works well for them. This is especially true for those who are suffering from opiate abuse, as there are only about 10 that specialize in treating the withdrawals that are associated in detoxification.
