In South Dakota, there are many issues that are affecting the people within the state. Even though there are less than 1 million people, many of these people still suffer from drug and alcohol abuse. Like many of the western or southern states of the Union, this particular state has a big problem with the use of methamphetamines. Unfortunately, this highly addictive drug is one that is known to destroy the lives of everyone that it touches, without relent. This has come, like it has in many other states, to be a true sentiment. People who are suffering from this abuse should seek treatment immediately, as there is an inevitable downward spiral to come. Although meth is a growing danger in the state, alcohol abuse is still the widest abused substance in the state, accounting for most of the people in treatment centers throughout South Dakota.
With the use of meth, treatment into treatment centers doubled from the year 2004-2006, as people found out that they will need help in destroying this demon in their lives. One of the widely affected demographic when it comes to meth abuse is the younger crowd, which starts out as an experiment, and then before they know it they are using the drug daily. Although South Dakota children and young adults may be one of the lowest ranked states when it comes to perceived risk in drinking, they are one of the highest when it comes to first use of illicit substances. In fact, out of more than 15,000 people in treatment centers in the state, more than 90% of them said that they tried their first drug before they were 21.
Children and young adults are getting their hands on meth, yet, 51% of these patients are in drug treatment programs because of abusing alcohol. This figure is not too shocking, considering that many parents have alcohol in their refrigerators that their children can access when the parents are away. Perhaps what is shocking is the fact that there are not more for this common substance, as opposed to illicit drugs.
One of the most important things that parents can do is to educate their children when it comes to the dangers of substance abuse, as it is a very real consequence when anything is used in excess. If there is not adequate information bestowed upon children, it is likely that their own children will find themselves in one of South Dakota’s 58 treatment centers. Unfortunately, it does not take a long time for a person to become addicted to something, and usually once they figure out, it may be too late.
Luckily, in the state of South Dakota, for those who find that they are addicted will have somewhere to regain control of their lives. There are specialists that are qualified in handling any problem that the abuser may have, and with enough thorough research, everyone can find a facility that will be right for them. Recovery is not something easy to do, but it can be achieved.
