Mississippi is a state with many problems with drug abuse. With its geographical location, it is ideal for many drug smugglers to bring their drugs into the state, a problem that has been persistent for many years. The state also has extensive rail systems, giving it the title the “Crossroads of the South.”Also, with over 350 miles of coastline to the south, drug smugglers feel as if they can flood the market with as many debilitating drugs that the state can take. In Mississippi particularly, there are three drugs that are causing the most problems: marijuana, cocaine, and methamphetamine.
Just as many states do, Mississippi has a problem with marijuana. It is the most frequently abused drug in the state, and is readily available for just about anyone who’s looking for the drug. Because of the mostly rural landscape, it provides a lot of area for manufacturing the drug locally, as well as Mexican organizations pushing the drug through the state, and Mississippi is seen as a transshipment point for some of the smugglers. Albeit not to be as powerful of the three drugs, it still has highly addictive qualities.
Cocaine abuse is another real threat for the state, as it is the primary drug of concern in Mississippi, according to DEA. In the form of crack, this drug has put local law enforcement agencies in a state of panic, as more people are getting swept up in addiction. Since it is cheap and relatively easy to create as opposed to its counterpart, there are more manufacturers and users for the drug. This comes as disheartening news, especially considering the destructive properties and ease of addiction to the drug, especially when coupled with the accessibility. With all of these things combined, it creates an epidemic.
Meth abuse is a growing problem for the state as well, which has been monitored in the state of Mississippi and most southern states as well. Like crack cocaine, this is a drug that is cheap and relatively easy to create. It also shares the fact that it is equally destructive as well as being equally addictive. The use of methamphetamines is on the rise, and at a rate that local law enforcement agencies are struggling to catch up with.
Unfortunately, there are just more than 100 facilities directed at providing solutions for the scores of drug abusers in the state. Not only that, only 35% of these facilities offers inpatient services. In some cases, the use of residential drug treatment programs are vital to the success of many of the patients that they help, especially considering that many of these people have been doing drugs for a very long time.
Although the sources can be limited when getting adequate treatment for the problems that may ail them, they should still use discretion when choosing a program. Even if it may take moving from the state to receive the treatment that a prospective patient may need, there should be nothing put above well-being and ability to enhance the quality of life.
