The state of Massachusetts is one that has had a history of drug abuse, especially in the form of cocaine and heroin. Just like other states of the northeast, a large amount of the drugs are shipped from the state of New York, and disbursed throughout states in the region. In the year of 2006, more than 130 people in the state were admitted into recovery programs as a result of the dangerous effects that these drugs have had on their communities. In this particular state, more than cocaine or alcohol abuse, heroin is the drug of choice among many addicts in the state. Last year, the reported percentage of people in drug treatment programs were about 40%, a frightening number that only seems to get larger as the years go on.
With that shocking number, it goes without saying that this state ranks well above the national average when it comes to the use of illicit drugs, it even surpasses the rest of the Union in alcohol. The city of Boston is one that is particularly targeted, especially considering that it is an area where Canadian drug smugglers make a lot of money selling drugs, with combined efforts with smugglers in New York. With this grim prognosis for many of the addicts in the state, it even deepens with the fact that Massachusetts is actually losing many of their drug treatment programs in the state. In 2002, there were about 350 facilities, and just four years later, there were only 312. This comes as disheartening news, as there is an increase of the illicit drug trade in the state. Fortunately for those people who do enter these facilities, they have the luxury of being provided unlimited access to treatments, meaning that the specialists will provide care to those in any way that they need it. So, even though they may not have the option of choosing out of very many facilities, they have a benefit in that sense.
Just last year, the DEA seized 7.6 kilograms of heroin as well as 211.9 kilograms of cocaine. The state is also on the rise for violent crimes, ranking in at 18th as the most violent state in the Union. Many of the convictions associated with the crimes happen to be because of drugs.
For the person who thinks that they may need help from drug abuse, it is highly advisable that they seek the help that they need. The consequences are greater from neglecting the problem than there would be from any other decision of apathy. If a person does not care enough to get adequate help, their life is at stake. And although there are declining treatment facilities in the state, there are still many choices the addict can choose that will steer their lives in a better direction. One of the best pieces of advice when looking for a prospective center is to be sure that the center of choice will offer the treatment that is needed, as well as it provides an aura of comfort.
