The state of Louisiana has long to be known as one of the most important routes in the drug trade. The southern border of the state is made up of the Gulf of Mexico, the fifth largest sea area in the world. With this stated the international drug trade profits heavily off of their efforts in the bayou. And with the Big Easy, New Orleans, many of the drugs offered here are considered to be in large quantities. The state of Louisiana ranks well above the national average when it comes to drug abuse, especially among the adult community. When it comes to cocaine, this is where the state takes the cake. This is one of the largest cocaine communities when it comes to the abuse, especially in the form of crack.
Crack cocaine is considered the drug of choice between most people in the southern state of Lousiana, a problem that continues to grow with each passing day. In terms of drug treatment programs, the last recorded number was 22,000 admissions in the year of 2006. This large number consisted predominantly because of cocaine and alcohol. In over 140 treatment centers, there are quite a few options for the citizen to choose from. The saddening figure of treatment center admissions was the fact that over 6% of them were under the age of 18. This creates a unique problem for the state, the fact that there may not be adequate knowledge bestowed upon the youth. The culture of Louisiana is much different in the sense of this state and others, as they are known for acting easy and being a little more option to experimentation.
The young adult age group is one that is targeted for most of the leading cause of abuse of substances, especially alcohol abuse. This demographic, 18-24, led the state in binge and heavy drinking in Lousiana. This comes to be disheartening, as this age group also makes up a large portion of people who smoke marijuana in the state. This has led to exorbitant crime in the state, one that leads nearly the entire nation in drug convictions.
Although the numbers are down in the past couple of years, there are also exceptionally less people in the state in the last few years. The use and distribution of illicit drugs have left communities shattered, and a need for more drug treatment solutions in the state.
In Lousiana, there are many solutions for help available, and should be taken seriously if a person really wants to get clean. Luckily, the state has quite a few resources when it comes to offering inpatient, or residential, care. With about 47 different places to choose from, the drug abuser will more than likely find what they are looking for in intensive rehabilitation services. Although, finding help may take a fair amount of research, especially considering the population of the state with an opiate addiction. There are only about 10 of these programs outfitted with the techniques that are required to combat this particular brand of addiction.
