Kentucky is one of the states (technically a commonwealth) that are historically known for drug abuse. It has always been one that was known for its southern lifestyle, one with a subculture of hard drinking. More recently, it has been one that has gained notoriety for other drugs, illicit ones. Marijuana abuse has always been one of the widely abused drugs in Kentucky, especially considering the landscape. The south has always been what drug manufacturers saw as an amazing way to make profit, especially when it comes to marijuana and methamphetamines. In fact, Kentucky ranked second as the state with the largest domestic marijuana growth, a startling number especially considering the states of California and Florida that have been known as large drug exporters. The marijuana market is one that is huge, and last year, the DEA seized 4,829 kilograms of the drug from the commonwealth. This had lead to many arrests in the state, which has seen a rise in drug-related arrests in the past few years.

Like many southern states, there is a large methamphetamine problem in the state as well. Provided the avenues these manufacturers can take, the drug abusers always seem to be able to get their fix if they need it. This sprung the commonwealth of Kentucky into action, as they instilled 312 different drug treatment programs, all servicing the need of the people who suffer from the disease of addiction. According to the DEA, southeastern Kentucky continues to be plagued by opiates other than heroin, which will create a problem for those looking for a methadone treatment. With less than 15 of the 312 treatment centers offering such treatment, it will not be uncommon for the opiate abuser to have to contract help that may be far from their communities.

The most important thing about finding the best treatment center is to make sure that they will offer the services that a potential person may need; they all are not created equally. In the case of the severe condition, it is generally not recommended for them to try an outpatient brand of care. Since in these cases, the chance of relapse is high, it is advisable that they are to choose an applicable residential treatment. In Kentucky, there are more than 50 of these drug treatment programs available, so many people with heavier addictions can be cared for. It is also pertinent for the patient to be as comfortable as they can be, given the situation. Since recovery is something considered quite difficult, it is important for the patient to be in a positive environment for their recovery to be favorable, and they can leave their old lifestyles behind.
