Indiana, a state of the Midwest is not generally known for high volumes of drug trafficking, alcohol abuse, or even any mainstream drug abuse. It ranks well below national levels in most instances. While it may not be synonymous with the word “drug”, it still is a reality of the people within the state. One of the biggest concerns for the residents who reside in the state is the abuse of pharmaceutical drugs, and ranks within the highest of any states in the Union. And although they are legal, the abuse of these drugs is widespread throughout the state, and this means growing numbers for drug treatment centers throughout Indiana.
While the mainstream drugs are readily available in the state, most people decide to use these drugs because they do not run a high risk of being jailed for doing so. More often than not, xanax abuse, or another painkiller, is something that is easy to obtain. as the pills can be found in the medicine cabinet of the home. This creates an additional element of danger, taking into account that the pills can fall into the wrong hands, such as a child, and the disease of addiction can start at home. Having a medicine cabinet at home, especially when dealing with impressionable teenagers is risky, as they are becoming more educated as to what can get them high, and distributing these drugs throughout the school system.
Although prescription pill abuse seems to be one of the biggest drug problems in Indiana, there are still people using cocaine, heroin, and marijuana. Last year the DEA seized 846 kilograms of marijuana, 43 kilograms of cocaine, and 11 kilograms of heroin from the state. There is also a growing meth problem in the state, as there were a reported 724 meth lab incidents just last year. It is well known that meth abuse is spreading across the country, but what it not generally known is the detriment that it creates for the communities that it touches. There are not very many drugs as harmful as this killer, and with it’s cheap composition, many younger people are getting their hands onto the drug. Knowledge on the dangers of drugs needs to be reiterated, as they are still a very big part of the culture, and with each new generation, new threats arise.
In the state of Indiana, there are many drug treatment programs that a person can turn to if they are feeling as if there may be an addiction to a substance. With more than 320 different treatment facilities in the state, there is something for everyone. While they all may not cater to a certain type of addiction, every center has their certain area of expertise. In choosing the treatment center, people should find out which is right for them as they are starting down the road to recovery. Since this may be one of the hardest things that they have done, researching the prospective center is a must if they want to break the habit.
