With states battling drug abuse throughout the Union, Idaho is one historically known for its residents not actively pursuing many different types of drugs. Since 1993, there has been a steady increase of those who have died with risks associated with alcohol, at higher levels seen in many other states. This is especially true for young adults, who are nationally more likely to drink and drive than their counterparts in other states. While alcohol is one of the biggest problems facing the state, Idaho still has seen a rise in methamphetamine abuse since the millennium. Although it is not as big of a problem as in other states, there still is a growing concern for its residents with the disease of addiction.

With meth abuse in Idaho, albeit somewhat minimal, is still a great concern living in this state. Since the tendencies of people who are suffering from this drug are attributed to crime, the reasoning behind this is understandable. In addition to this, it is something that is quite addictive, therefore making the desire to commit crimes to get their “fixes” are a lot higher. At 11.6 kilograms seized by the DEA last year, it’s safe to assume that this is the most prevalent drug in the state. Even though it’s not as addictive as meth, the abuse of marijuana has always been a concern for the citizens of Idaho.

While it may be considered a “safer” drug than meth, the landscape of Idaho makes for ideal marijuana cultivation. By using national and federal parks, manufacturing this drug in this state is much easier than in other states. With the rampant marijuana abuse, there are obvious associated risks that go along with such. Other than addiction, there is also the problem of law enforcement. In Idaho, last year the numbers for arrests associated with drugs were of the highest the state has seen in many years.

Marijuana makes up about 60% of the arrests in this state, and the high number is made mostly of those less than 18 years of age. With the unique landscape exploited, adequate drug treatment programs to counterbalance the accessibility of marijuana. In the state, there are a little less than 60 of the facilities available, all specializing in care for those suffering from the damages of drugs.

While they all offer some sort of care, they are all not the same facility. While the options are available for nearly everyone, with about 70% receiving funding, they are not all comprehensive facilities. When choosing the prospective program, the prospective patient should do their research on many of the programs available in Idaho. For instance, many people would best be treated by a residential care facility, and in the state of Idaho, there are not very many (about 15.) This means that they need to be sure that they know what they need in a drug treatment program, and may need to even need to look for solutions not provided by Idaho, and even leave the state if they genuinely want alternative sobriety solutions.
