While the state of Hawaii may be along the trade route, especially in the distribution of drugs, the state still does not rank as high as many others. With this stated, this does not mean that they are not suffering from a rising drug problem. While it may not be one of the more populated states, Hawaii has had increasing trouble when it comes to meth abuse. This comes as something shocking, especially considering the drug is one known to be highly addictive. As of last year, even though there are more than a million people in the state, there were less than 8,000 residents admitted into drug treatment programs.

What makes Hawaii similar to many other states is the rise of methamphetamine, and the use is becoming more prevalent to even unexpected locations in Hawaii. Just last year, the DEA seized more than 54 kilograms of the drug, more than any illicit substance. Usually, more marijuana or cocaine is seized by the DEA than a drug like crystal meth, but this is not the case in Hawaii. Since this drug is highly addictive, leads to psychotic behavior, it can destroy a life quicker than most. Produced in Mexico and California, crystal meth is shipped to Hawaii, creating the need for capable drug treatment programs. As of last year, there are just over 100 of these programs available, but are growing with an increasing need for adequate help for drug abusers.

Hawaii faces a unique problem in their drug problem, which are dramatically different than the problems most states face in combating drugs. In Hawaii, younger children are known to abuse drugs than those are younger. This is a scary fact, considering that the younger the child experiments with a drug, the higher the likelihood that there will be some dependency. With this being such a terrifying number, the parents of children should be specifically focused on obtaining the best care for their loved ones, if they so need it. The best way for the parent to be able to get the best help for their child is to determine whether their child has a problem early on, before it becomes too out of hand. If treated early enough, it will be easier for the child to successfully overcome the problem they are suffering from, and begin the road to recovery.

When choosing an adequate drug treatment program, being selective is the best key to becoming clean. For instance, if a potential patient may feel as if they may need a residential care facility, then they have very few sources between the islands. Out of about 100 drug treatment programs, less than 1/5 of these programs are dedicated to providing a live-in service. In the case of a state such as Hawaii, meth abuse is usually something that is combated within the walls of a treatment center, effectively battling the strength of addiction. In combating the throws of addiction, there will need to be serious steps taken if there is to be any success.
