The state of Georgia has a unique role for drug trafficking organizations, being strategically placed through the 1-95 corridor linking the north and south, as well as I-20 that runs straight toward the Gulf Coast. Additionally, it is a central hub for travel throughout the United States with the city of Atlanta. This makes it a vital transshipment hub in the country for these organizations, and they distribute their wares throughout the state, as well. Unfortunately, this creates drug abuse problems for this particular state, and every mainstream drug has been on an incline since 2002. This, like most other states, is a common reality. While the admission of people with alcohol is on the decline, drug dependency is still on the rise.

With all of the highs that the people of Georgia are using, there is a strong desire for relief from the lows. Cocaine and methamphetamine are the strongest areas of addiction in the state, including the increase of the crystallized form of meth, known as “ice.” These drugs are manufactured within the state in rural areas, and then distributed about the community, primarily in Metro-Atlanta communities. Although Georgia’s meth manufacturers are located in areas with less people, their reach is slowly extending over the state, smothering all who it touches. This highly addictive drug composes more than 13% of people admitted into drug treatment programs in the state. This number is one that increases every year, as the drug increases in popularity and spreads further.

Although this graph correlates to a decline on the demand for methamphetamine, there is still sufficient for need for the drug in most cities of Georgia. This harrowing reality has become commonplace in many areas in the state, as the clutches of the drug are that strong. The worst part about this drug is that it is reaching a very young age, polluting schools with this homemade drug, and corrupting the youth on a large scale.

Marijuana abuse, also similar to other states, is still considered a drug that’s “no big deal.” While it is not linked to any long-term effects, it still has high addictive properties. And since it is well-known to have correlation to the use of other drugs, it’s still saddening for those who use this substance in any measure.

In terms of cocaine addiction, crack has becoming the premier problem within Atlanta city limits, which has had a sharp increase on the crime rate within the city. With more than 270 treatment centers available for those that are ailing from drug abuse, there is sufficient help. In the case of Georgia treatment centers, or any state, there needs to be much research done before selecting. Every program will not work for every person, and many centers offer a broad approach to treating people who have problems with drug abuse. While this may work for many, wide-ranging solutions may not be beneficial for numerous people. So, discretion is paramount in finding the best treatment center for the addict, as there is always the potential for relapse.
