Because of its closeness to New York and Canada alike, Connecticut is known as one of the Northeast’s transshipment zones. With that being the case, there is definite drug abuse in the state. Although drugs such as methamphetamine are uncommon, there is still the potential for someone falling victim to the other drugs that are readily available in the state. For instance, heroin is many citizens’ drug of choice, as well as cocaine. The state has had a long history with these drugs, and is known for having some of the highest levels of drug and alcohol abuse in the nation.
Heroin abuse in Connecticut is rampant, even for teenagers. A staggering 5% of teenagers (aged 12-17) have tried illicit drugs other than the gateway drug, and most of this is made up of this particular drug. This comes as frightening, especially considering the young age, and the heightened chance that they will grow up with some kind of substance dependency. Unfortunately, this is a trend that does not seem like it will relent without the aid of some sort of treatment facility. But, in Connecticut, they offer some sort of hope by providing more than 200 treatment centers, dedicated to cleaning up people who need them. Just like heroin, there are many with an affinity for prescription painkillers, which can in some cases be likened to the drug. Sometimes, people who cannot get their hands on this drug, they may substitute it for a prescription painkillers. This is frightening, considering that these drugs are just as legal, and almost as addictive.
Sadly, there are less than 50 treatment centers in Connecticut that specialize in opiate abuse. Since this particular treatment requires a specialist, treatment cannot be given to everyone in their immediate area. Although, since the need for adequate treatment is paramount, they should take serious measures to assure that they are accommodated.
Another epidemic in Connecticut is marijuana abuse. This is one of the leading states offering highly potent marijuana, both grown locally and shipped from the Great White North. These strands of marijuana are different in composition, and can be highly addictive, if they are smoked enough. While they may not be as addictive as heroin or cocaine, they will destroy the lives of many people who come in contact with these stronger varieties of the drug.
For those in need of treatment, they should concisder all of their options before they make the call. There are many programs that a person can be admitted to, and since all of these do not perform the same methods, people will need to do their research. While a outpatient drug treatment program may be a great way for the person to get their treatment and continue to do some of the other things that they used to, this is definitely not for everyone. Some people need to be taken down a different road, modify their behavior, and then be thrust back into the world. The road is long to recovery, but with perseverance, it can be endured.
