The state of Alabama is one that has been consistently plagued with the ravages of illicit drugs and alcohol. The state is one known for being well above the national average in terms of drug abuse, which is considered disheartening for its citizens. For the second year in a row, methamphetamine is considered the biggest drug threat in the state of Alabama. In 2005, the amounts of meth labs seized went up 20% from the previous year, and although it has not been a consistent increase in subsequent years, manufacture and distribution of the drug still grows. Drug abuse in Alabama does not stop at amphetamines. Club drugs are also a big problems facing Alabama, such as MDMA (Ecstasy), especially in the areas where colleges and universities are concerned.
Although these club drugs are a big threat to the state, they are slowly being replaced by the more accessible methamphetamine, even in the club or party. With this highly addictive drug growing in abuse, the number of drug related arrests of Alabama have skyrocketed in the past 2 years. In the year of 2007, the number of arrests more than doubled than the previous year.
While there may be an influx of drugs being presented to Alabama, there are avenues for the person to explore if they want help. Drug treatment programs are in many areas of the state, and are available for anyone who wants to see an end to a deplorable lifestyle. With more than 130 different programs available, everyone can be treated. Most of the facilities are on an outpatient basis, while about 38 of them actually offer residential care for the user who needs it. For the person searching for a favorable program, it is best to do adequate research.
Getting help is one of the most important things a person can do to get their lives back on track. The use of illicit drugs and alcohol is a growing problem in the United States, and without sufficient help, the quality of life will continue to diminish. Unfortunately, untreated drug abuse usually does not improve with time. The strength of addiction grows, and in some cases, the chance for a productive life lessens as well.
